Abstract

Abstract Berlioz's Les Troyens is considered an “episodic” opera, with scenes unified by the listeners’ knowledge of its literary source, the Aeneid. The author shows that there is a tripartite dramatic structure underlying the work. Each section builds to a climax, and within each of the three sections many events are parallel to those in other sections. Musical recurrences underscore the tripartite structure; in addition, there are many other musical preparations and recalls throughout the work. These all provide a strong organizing factor for the seemingly disjunct scenes of the opera.
