Abstract

I think there is a basic musical logic which is sort of internalizedprogrammed, if you will-in my mind that makes me do things a certain way. I think that it was formulated very early in my life and that it has to do with the musical system with which I first came in contact; it involved certain black [music] approaches to how things should happen in time, to certain musical gestures, certain musical values, certain basic concepts of rhythm, etc. Now, anything else I've learned has been incorporated within that system (Southern 1978, 65).
