Abstract

Abstract Ship collisions are a notable hazard for any bridge spanning a water way. Globally, one sees an increase in the number of planned floating bridges. These long-span floating bridges have unique aspects when exposed to ship collision events due to their size, flexibility, mooring configuration and hydrodynamic effects. A large analysis scope was performed during the Ferry-free E39-project for the Bjørnafjorden crossing in Norway, of which key findings are discussed in this paper. Aspects of analysis methodology and the connection between lateral flexibility and hydrodynamic damping are discussed, as well as residual strength considerations for the bridge in damaged condition.
