Abstract
This study sought to investigate aspects of alcohol use by students attending a South African university. A convenience sample of 40 students (20 male, 20 female; aged 20–30 years.) participated. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire and interviews in this study and were described and summarized using descriptive statistics. A significant minority of the students who used alcohol indicated that they were introduced to alcohol use by a friend or relative. Others were self-initiators. A minority proportion believed their academic life was adversely affected by alcohol use. Alcohol drinking impacted the wellbeing of the university students.
