Abstract

Abstract The area between the Euphrates river and the western border of Iraq consists of a rocky plain, with generally subdued relief, underlain by eastward and northeastward gently dipping formations ranging in age from Triassic in the west to Recent at the Euphrates. Local faults reflect stresses in the basement of the Syrian plateau resulting from the tendency to reestablish isostatic equilibrium.
