Abstract

Objective: to determine the association between the human development index in the population with diabetes mellitus type 2 (dm2) who attend Family Medicine Units. Methods: Cross-sectional and crossed association study. To create the database, prevalence was considered for official records of dm2 in patients over 20 years old, who were attended at outpatient of 30 Family Medicine Units of the San Luis Potosi delegation, of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (imss). The Human Development Index (hdi) of San Luis Potosi was obtained through the data published by the United Nations Development Program. Descriptive and inferential statistics with the Spearman correlation coefficient was applied, as well as multiple linear regression. The stata v. 12 program was used for statistical analyses. Results: a significant association between high hdi and the prevalence of dm2 (p=0.0016), this association is directly proportional between the two variables. Conclusions: it was determined that the hdi is not only a useful measure to evaluate the economic development, in health or education, but is also a variable closely associated to the dm2 prevalence for the analyzed municipalities.
