Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance is spreading worldwide among bacteria that are pathogenic to humans—threatening public health and intensifying concern about the extensive use of antimicrobials in food production. There currently is a shortage of scientific data on the actual magnitude of antimicrobial resistance directly linked to agricultural use. But ASM believes there is sufficient evidence to demand a much closer, more thorough look at the potential effects of food production practices on our ability to treat human infections. It clearly is time for a coordinated, strongly science-based effort to minimize the negative effects of resistant pathogens.
