Abstract

A Kidneys are preserved either in cold storage or by pulsatile perfusion. With cold storage, the kidney is submerged in a cold electrolyte solution in a sterile plastic bag. The bag is then put into a plastic container and stored in an ice-filled, insulated box (a cooler). Kidneys taken from cadavers can be stored up to 40 hours in cold storage. With pulsatile perfusion, a cannula inserted into the renal artery is attached to a machine that pumps a plasma-like solution through the kidney. With pulsatile pressure and flow carefully monitored and sterility maintained, the kidney is preserved for 50 or more hours.
