Abstract

This invited commentary contains a former breast cancer patient’s reaction after reading Amy Price’s article ‘Sarah’s Choice: Breast Cancer and Mammogram Screening Decisions’. The current climate of changing medical protocol regarding early breast cancer screenings is daunting at best. Controversial decisions as to their frequency, the conflicting value of the mammogram as an effective tool, and how these factors will impact on the survival rate of any breast cancer patient are up for question. Whether or not the current protocol is based on the latest studies or mere cost saving measures, is it important to follow the system’s decision or to decide for oneself what is truly best? All this is examined in this narrative.
