Abstract

Doctors and nurses must assume an increasing responsibility for designing and supervising the rapidly expanding programs for family planning and population control. This survey concentrates on the medical colleges of India which devote an average of 10.6 hours to the teaching of population dynamics, family planning programs, conception control techniques, and related social, cultural, educational, and motivational aspects. Ward rounds and family planning clinics provide observation and some experience during clerkship and internship. The time assigned to family planning has almost doubled in the past two years, and far exceeds the time allotted in US and United Kingdom medical schools. Only the two leading medical schools in Taiwan and two in Seoul can match this amount of teaching. These changes indicate a responsiveness to national needs and conditions.
