Abstract

John R. Murray was at university at Magdalen College, Oxford, during which time he walked from London to Oxford on a Sunday in the footsteps of John Buchan, swam the Bosphorus from Europe to Asia supervised from a rowing boat by Freya Stark, the Arabian traveller, and climbed Mount Parnassus by night guided by the moonlit blanched rocks of the river beds. After leaving Oxford he studied printing and went to Ashridge Management College before entering the family publishing firm. This article is based on the talk given to the Society on March 9, 2004.
