That theory has lost credibility and it was dismissed by the major scholars (Clark & Clark, 1977) because it missed the primary cognitive functions of language (representation and mediation) and the basic communicative functions of language, which are the centrality of intent (Bruner, 1986; Muma, 1998; Nelson, 1985, 1996; Searle, 1992) and both implicit and explicit content (Sperber & Wilson, 1986). Accordingly, the national council of chairs has adopted the title “Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders” (CAPCSD). This title reflects the increasing awareness that the modality orientation is archaic. Furthermore, 90 departments in the field have the title “Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders” and 74 other departments are titled “Department of Communication Disorders.” Thus, these titles reflect endeavors to become up to date with developments in the field. Just as professionals are charged by the ASHA Code of Ethics to be up to date with developments in the field, the professional association (ASHA) should also reflect an up-to-date perspective.
