Abstract

summary Closterium didymotocum var. pygmaeiim is described as a new variety because of its narrow width and its lack of subapical thickenings on the cell wall. An unusual type of asexual spore formation is described in which the protoplast escapes from the enclosing cell wall and forms a spherical resistant spore. On germination the spore produces a single vegetative cell.
