Abstract

On the surface, 1971-79: Results from the Second National Music Assessment, a comparative survey of the music achievement of a nationally representative sample of 2,500 nine-, thirteen-, and seventeenyear-olds in 1971-72 and in 1978-79, suggests a slight decline in the music knowledge of the nation's students. But a closer look at the objectives, procedures, and questions used in the survev casts the music assessment findings in a much better light. As reported in NewsBrief, MEJ March 1982, page 9, the second music assessment results revealed that most students listened to music, but those in the youngest and oldest age categories performed several percentage points below their counterparts in the first assessment.
