Abstract

outbreak of 174 cases of aseptic meningitis was reported in Oahu, Hawaii. Forty-four of these were associated with a mouse pathogenic, serologic variant of the prototype echo 9. Incidence was greatest in male infants and was uniform by race and socioeconomic status. Spread occurred throughout Oahu by contiguous areas and with frequent family illness. The findings illustrate that occurrence of an epidemic in susceptible groups may depend primarily on opportunity for direct contact, regardless of season, latitude, or socioeconomic status.
