Abstract

In most Ascomycetes the lower part of the ascospore is the mirror image of the upper. In many species, however, the upper part is relatively broad and blunt, and the lower narrow and pointed. The reverse arrangement never appears to occur. Possible biological advantages of the ascospore with blunt anterior end and more tapered posterior one are discussed.
