Abstract

1. 1. A dose of ascorbic acid (200 mg/kg) given intra-abdominally was actively taken up by the adrenals without affecting plasma corticosterone concentrations. 2. 2. When such birds were given glucagon (30 μg/kg) 2 hr after treatment there was a significant increase in plasma corticosterone within 15 min, persisting for at least 45 min. The response was absent from controls. 3. 3. Corticotrophin (30 IU/kg) significantly accelerated the increase in corticosterone concentration but did not affect the peak response. 4. 4. The lipacidaemic and glycaemic responses to the hormones were not affected by pretreatment with ascorbic acid.
