Abstract

This is a review essay of the volume of the Max Weber Gesamtausgabe which contains the version of Die protestantische Ethik und der “Geist” des Kapitalismus that was published in the Archiv für Sozialwissenschaft und Sozialpolitik in 1904-1905. This volume also contains the major criticisms of Weber’s work and his replies. In addition, it includes some of his other writings from 1904 to 1911 as well as Ernst Troeltsch’s lecture on natural law which he gave at the first conference of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Soziologie in 1910. Together, these writings provide a relatively complete view of Weber’s ideas concerning ascetic Protestantism and the rise of modern capitalism.
