Abstract

Retropharyngeal abscess (RPA) is an uncommon complication of upper-respiratory infections in children result-ing from spread of infection to and eventual suppuration of retropharyngeal lymph nodes. The diagnosis is based on the use of TC. The patients can be managed with intravenous antibiotics or with surgical intervention, whether it is necessary. Actually the complications of RPA are uncommon, but there is a high correlation between MRSA infection and mediastinitis. Many authors reported a marked rise in the incidence of RPA over recent years so that it can be considered as an emerging disease and as a differential diagnosis of others disease such as epiglottitis.
