Abstract

Asbestos is the name assigned for decades to a group of fibrous materials with multiple commercial uses. All forms of asbestos are carcinogenic to humans, and can cause lung cancer, larynx cancer, ovarian cancer, mesothelioma, and other related diseases. On July 11, 2019 was promulgated in Colombia the Law 1968 Ana Cecilia Nino that prohibits to exploit, produce, commercialize, import, distribute or export any variety of asbestos and the products made with it in the national territory. With the objective of generating a wide panorama on the asbestos as occupational carcinogen in Colombia, the present review approaches four fundamental perspectives of interest: the molecular and cellular mechanisms, the molecular pathology, the clinical research and the public health in Colombia.
