Abstract
At the weekend plenary session of this year's annual American Society of Addiction Medicine conference, held in Orlando earlier this month, attendees heard about the role of Medicaid in treating substance use disorders (SUDs). “I hope that today's conversation will help our audience understand these key changes and explore creative ways we can work with federal and state officials to respond to our patients' needs,” said ASAM President Paul Earley, M.D., who moderated the session. Kimberly Brandt, J.D., M.A., principal deputy administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), said the federal agency is using its “Opioid Roadmap” to implement its three‐pronged approach of preventing new cases of opioid use disorder (OUD), treating patients who have OUD, and targeting prevention and treatment using data. She also discussed two new initiatives from the CMS: the Maternal Opioid Misuse (MOM) model and the Integrated Care for Kids (InCK) model.
