Abstract

The locus of the research is the Antonio Sarlo State Agricultural and Technical School, in Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ. The school has undergone a process of disrepute due to reduced enrollment in the Agriculture Course. We aimed at understanding the reasons for this decline. Thus, we carried out a qualitative research coupled with the construction of the history of the institution, as well as an analysis of important aspects of the agricultural sector to understand the influences of the economy for the course. The research included interviews with people in the school community. Results indicate two different reasons: one related to local economic changes that influence the reduction of students, and the other related to the state educational policies that do not attend particularities of the vocational education provided by the school.
