Abstract

The works that will be dealt with next are part of set of adultery novels that appeared in the second half of the 19th century in Europe, such as Flaubert's Madame Bovary (1857) or Tolstoy's Anna Karenina (1877), and that became a privileged type of period and social criticism novel (Oliveira, 2000: 43). The theme of hauntings in the novels Effi Briest (1895) by Theodor Fontane and O Primo Basilio (1878) by Eca de Queiros will be addressed.
