Abstract
Abstract Arya Vaidyan N. Rama Varier, the founder of Arya Vaidya Nilayam (AVN), was born in 1903 in South Malabar in the Madras Presidency. He studied Ayurveda at Arya Vaidya Patashala, Kottakkal. He was among the first few disciples of Late Vaidyaratnam P.S. Varier, a legendary figure in the field of Ayurveda from Kottakkal, Kerala. After relocating to Madurai, Tamil Nadu, he established a clinic with a modest capital and prepared medicines for his practice. His effective treatment and compassion for patients made him a popular physician in the area. He established AVN in 1930, popularizing authentic Ayurveda in Madurai and its surroundings. Varier took the initiative to develop the Ayurveda system in Tamil Nadu and was awarded the title of “Ayurveda Vachaspati” by the Madurai Swadeshi Vaidya Sabha in recognition of his meritorious services to Ayurveda and humanity.
