Abstract

ABSTRACTThis article examines responses from the New Zealand arts policy field to an earthquake which caused major damage in the CBD of one of New Zealand's major cities. While new performance spaces were caught up in the government's vision of an expensive arts precinct to be completed in the long term, a national funding body—Creative New Zealand—funds the individuals and organizations that produced the arts. A six-year program dealing with the crisis and recovery phases of the local arts scene helped keep many arts professionals practicing and also experimented with funding an innovative transitional scene.
