Abstract
October 2012 saw the ninth annual Arts and Minds competition, an art and creative writing event which encourages children to question and explore social and ethical issues. The competition celebrates Black History Month, asking children to portray matters such as cultural diversity, racism and community cohesion in a unique and creative way. It is divided into categories that children from primary, secondary and special schools can enter, with prizes awarded at a national awards ceremony in London. Beaufort Special School in Hodge Hill were the overall winners of this year’s competition. A group of year 4-6 children were given this award for their piece We Are All = Equal, which had already been classed as the winner of the primary special school category. The school was awarded £1000, and gift vouchers were given to every winning pupil. Gok Wan, TV presenter and Arts and Minds competition judge, described their entry as ‘beautifully written’ and ‘hugely inspiring in terms of its message’.
