Abstract

Almost in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, the Maltese islands provide harbours for various types of traditional fishing boat. One of these types, and the focus of this research, is the luzzu. Decorated with different colours and symbols, the once prominent luzzu is today found in only a few harbours. Using in situ research, these boats were studied to understand how the symbolism of their decorations might have changed throughout the years.
