Abstract

Permission for artificial termination of pregnancy in Czechoslovakia has been granted on medical or social grounds since 1958. It is not permissible on social grounds in a pregnancy of more than 12 weeks. Application for termination must be approved by a district Commission for Termination of pregnancy which consists of a gynecologist and 2 elected members. Terminations may be done only in the gynecology department of a hospital. An analysis of complications shows a decrease in birth rate. Immediate acute inflammatory complications occur in about 5% of the cases. Permanent complications such as chronic inflammatory conditions of the genital organs sterility ectopic pregnancy are found in 20-30% of all interruptions. These consequences are higher with the first pregnancy than with repeat pregnancies. An increased incidence of ectopic pregnancy and cervical incompetence connected with a previous termination has been noted.
