Abstract

AbstractArtificial selection is one of the best understood aspects of the domestication process and is the only genetically based mechanism that is unique to domestication. Artificial selection may be applied either inadvertently (unconsciously) or intentionally (consciously). This chapter provides examples of inadvertent and conscious artificial selection and discusses the differences between artificial and natural selection. It ends by describing how artificial selection experiments can provide insights regarding mechanisms of gene expression and the evolution of quantitative traits.
