Abstract

This paper describes the radiation characteristics of a cylindrical leaky-wave antenna, which is electronically scannable, and made of artificial-dielectric medium. The latter consists of thin parallel, perforated, conducting plates, embedded in a dielectric of relative-permittivity, ∈r. The parallel-plate artificial-dielectric antenna because of its cylindrical, compact form, and ease of fabrication, is preferable to the parallel-wire artificial-dielectric antenna reported earlier. Radiation patterns with ring-source, and waveguide excitation, for both TE-, and TM-modes are found to have in most cases, a single narrow beam whose magnitude and position can be adjusted by suitable choice of artificial-dielectric parameters, antenna diameter and frequency.
