Abstract

Ultrasound is the only technique that uses artifacts in diagnosis. "Good through transmission" and a "refractive artifact" indicate fluid. Acoustic shadowing can be produced by different tissues leading to different types of shadows and specific diagnoses. Fat produces a decrease in the speed of sound as compared with soft tissue leading to the writing of structures behind fat distal to their actual position. Other artifacts are also described.
