Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) results from infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). A severe respiratory distress syndrome requiring tracheal intubation develops in approximately 15% to 20% of hospitalized patients with COVID-19, and the mortality rate in these patients can exceed 70%. The extensive use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in COVID-19–associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) during the pandemic's first wave indicated unfavorable outcomes, raising questions about its usefulness.
