Abstract

Streptococcus uberis is one of the most prevalent pathogens responsible for bovine mastitis, one of the most costly animal diseases. Its ability to form biofilms can prevent effective antibiotic treatment. A potential alternative to the use of antibiotics is the bacteriocin nisin. However, it has been shown that many strains of S. uberis possess a nisin resistance protein (NSR). Pérez-Ibarreche et al. (e00391-21) demonstrate that a novel nisin derivative (nisin PV) can not only bypass the NSR system but also eradicate S. uberis biofilms. These findings will add new therapeutic possibilities for the control of S. uberis-associated mastitis.
