Saunders was born in Warminster, Pennsylvania, Seventh Month 12, 1859, but he moved to Pasadena, California, after a short business career, and devoted himself to the study of western botany and the Spanish missions, writing some seventeen books on these subjects. Friends Intelligencer AN OLD contributor to Quaker history appears in a new guise in the k series of articles begun in Third Month 29, 1941 (p. 197) under the title "Letters from the Past." The signature is "Now and Then," which tells very little, but the comments in the first letter on visiting historic Quaker sites in bombed London and Bristol to see what Friends are now doing in relief, identify the writer as our own Quaker antiquarian, professor of theology, librarian, peace advocate, and ambassador extraordinary of the American Friends Service Committee, Henry J. Cadbury. Letter 2 (Fourth Month 5, 1941, pp. 213-214) contains a description of life in modern Lisbon, port of entry and departure for Europe-bound Friends, and two notes on earlier Quaker contacts with Portugal, the more important being the visit of Anne Gargill in 1655, and her interrogation by the Inquisition.
