One of the chapters is called "Not Only Ours but Others: the Quaker Teaching Daughters of the Mid-Atlantic." This chapter appeared separately in History ofEducation Quarterly , 1984, Spring, pp. 3-19. * * * Allen and Unwin, Inc. have published Men ofBusiness and Politics: the Rise and Fall ofthe Quaker Pease Family in Northeast England, by Maurice William Kirby. The book is of particular interest to business and economics historians. Much attention is given to the role of religious non-conformity in facilitating the early entrepreneurial successes of the Pease family. * * * Edward L. Tucker, associate Professor of English at Virginia Politechnic Institute and the State University of Blacksburg, VA, is the author of The Shaping of Longfellow's "John Endicott": a Textual History Including Two Early Versions. The poem in play format records the persecution of the Quakers by the Puritans during the final period ofEndicott's governorship of Massachusetts. It has been published by the British Genealogical Publishing House of Phillimore & Co., Ltd., Shopwycke Hall, Chichester, Sussex, England. There is much narrative material on Quakers who were members of the Treffrey family. The book may be obtained from the above address at £15 plus postage and handling. * * * The Maryland Historical Magazine, v. 80, Summer 1985, contains an article by Kenneth L. Carroll ofthe Department of Religion at Southern Methodist University at Dallas, TX, on "An Eighteenth Century Episcopalian Attack on Quaker and Methodist Manumission of Slaves." * * * Kathryn Zabelle Derounian has published an article in the Pennsylvania Magazine ofHistory and Biography, v. 108, Oct. 1984, pp. 483-516, with the title: "A Dear, Dear Friend; Six Letters from Deborah Norris to Sally Wister, 1778-1779." * * * Mary R. Glover is the author of a booklet The Retreat at York: An Early Experiment in the Treatment ofMental Illness published by William Sessions, Ltd. , York, England, 1984. It contains illustrations, a selected reading list and index. * # * The Centre for Intergroup Studies, University of Cape Town, South Africa, has published a collection of essays entitled The Struggle for Democracy in South Africa: Conflict and Conflict Resolution. A. Paul Hare, a teacher, is editor of the volume which appeared in 1983. The book is complete with several appendices, bibliography and index. 60 Articles And Publications61 A short history of Friends in Sydney, Australia, is contained in a pamphlet called Sydney Friends. It was prepared by Vaughan Evans, illustrated by Halcyon Evans and issued by the Sydney Regional Friends Meeting in 1982. Persons desiring copies of the booklet or information on the group may write to Barney Smith, Friends House, Euston Road, London NW 1 2BJ. * * * Hubert Fox has written an account of family members from as early as 1833 under the title of Quaker Broadcloth, the Story ofJoseph and Marianna Fox and the Cousinery of Wellington. The book continues the author's history of the Fox family begun in Quaker Homespun, published in 1958. * * * Leeds Universities Libraries continue their work of publishing the inventory of the records of various British Friends meetings which are on deposit at Brotherton Library, Leeds, England LS2 9JT. Presently available is Inventory ofthe Records of Brighouse, Knaresborough, Leeds and Settle Monthly Meetings. * # # Persons interested in accounts of Friends' education in New England will enjoy an illustrated booklet published in 1983, Lincoln School, the First Century, by Dorothy Q. Gifford. The school has been associated with the Society of Friends in Rhode Island. * * * William Sessions Book Trust, The Ebor Press of York, England, published a second edition of Isabel Ross' biography Margaret Fell, Mother of Quakerism...
