Abstract

Although seldom treated extensively in Schnitzler literature, Spiel im Morgengrauen brings together in compact form many of the most important themes which run through Schnitzler's work: honor and dishonor, love and lust, fate and chance, life and death. Since the story was written in 1926, near the end of Schnitzler's life, we may expect that a careful analysis will reveal, if not SchnitSchnitzler's ultimate position, then at least one of his last statements with regard to the fundamental questions the story raises.
