Abstract

To report the result of complete radial tears treated using fibrin clots, which showed good meniscal healing and had excellent clinical outcomes. From Jun 2007 to May 2010, 12 patients with complete radial tears of the meniscus were treated by arthroscopic repair with fibrin clots. In all patients, the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) subjective knee form and Lysholm score were determined pre- and postoperatively. We recommended follow-up magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after 1 year. If indicated, we performed a second-look arthroscopic examination. At an average of 14 postoperative months, the Lysholm score and IKDC subjective knee score had improved from 65.3 and 57.5 to 93.5 and 90.1, respectively. All 12 cases showed complete healing on follow-up MRI. All seven patients undergoing a second-look examination had healed completely. We report 12 successful meniscal repairs using fibrin clots in complete radial tears. This surgical procedure appears to be a good treatment method for difficult cases, such as complete radial tears.
