Abstract

Patella instability is primarily a function of deficiency of the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL). Arthroscopic reefing of the MPFL is a minimally invasive technique that can restore stability to the patella for many patients with patella instability. Arthroscopic patella realignment is accomplished with an all inside technique using absorbable suture and arthroscopic knot tying techniques. Clinical results at 5-year follow-up demonstrate 93% good/excellent results with significant improvement in radiographic as well as clinical stability and alignment, and no redislocations. For most patients with uncomplicated patella instability, arthroscopic realignment is an excellent option for treatment.
