Abstract

Field investigations on predators of Rhyacionia frustrana (Comstock) were conducted in the Piedmont Region of South Carolina. Studies were carried out in 5- and 10-acre loblolly pine, Pinus taeda L., plantations with trees ranging from 3 to 7 feet tall. Fourteen species of insects and 7 species of spiders were found to be predaceous on R. frustrana. Most abundant of these predators were various species of spiders, populations of which were highest during the early and late summer. Two clerids, Phyllobaenus singularis (Wolcott) and P. lecontci (Wolcott), were important predators of 1st-generation R. frustrana larvae and pupae.
