Abstract

Arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint has been advocated for the operative treatment of failed silicone implants, severe hallux rigidus, and hallux valgus associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and cerebral palsy. The differences in operative approaches to the achievement of successful arthrodesis include (1) variations in the preparation of the bone, (2) differences in the type of internal fixation, and (3) the use of bone graft. The operative approach to arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint will be described with consideration to these technical variations.
