Abstract

SUMMARY The effects of IPPV with a pressure preset ventilator on alveolar-arterial oxygen tension difference, arterial oxygen tension and physiological deadspace were studied in eleven patients undergoing surgery for peripheral vascular disease. No significant difference in these values was found over a period of 2½ hours, but in five of the eleven patients studied, the VD/VT ratio rose by more than 4.7 per cent during the period of study. Possible reasons for this, and for the large increase in A-a Po2 found after induction of anaesthesia, are discussed.
