Abstract

In this chapter, we examine the psychological studies that have focused on visual artists' propensity for originality. First, we take a look back at the development of the field of psychology of art and the specific difficulties that have been encountered so far in their pursuit. We next examine the literature on creativity that has touched on artistic practice and that has centered on approaches and procedures. We wrap up by discussing some of the intriguing research topics that remain, including those on the nature of the creative brain, the stages of artistic growth, and methods of evaluating artistic performance.
