Abstract

The focus of this paper is to explore the implications of body awareness and motion within the context of art therapy practice. It discusses the following: 1) the ways in which we are conditioned to ‘fit in’ to the body of culture and society, 2) how subjectivity operates as a process (moving across a series of images), 3) the role of the body as a dynamic expression of psychological material (both conscious and unconscious), 4) the art therapist's relationship to his/her own body, and 5) methods of facilitating somatic and kinesthetic awareness within art therapy.
