Abstract

This chapter chronicles and discusses arts education within the context of schools in Singapore. There is a comprehensive literature on arts and culture policies in Singapore, but little has been mentioned about art education. Singapore's People's Action Party government has been careful in deploying education policies for nation‐building since the British government ceased its rule in 1959. Many of the government's visions and plans rely heavily on education as their main strategic instrument. With the government's recent recognition of art's economic potentials and other benefits in the new economy has come increased investment in the arts as well as attention to art education. This chapter examines some significant episodes in Singapore's education and art education landscape and concludes that, while positive strides have been made in key elements such as the syllabuses and teacher education, the verdict on whether Singapore is a nation with “creative” citizens remains open.
