Abstract
This is the second of two articles regarding the new arsenic regulation. In the August 2002 issue of Opflow, Part I described the requirements of the regulation, how to determine which utilities should be concerned about arsenic, and some compliance strategies, including point‐of‐use and point‐of‐entry devices. This article, which is Part II, addresses treatment options and factors to consider when selecting an arsenic removal technology. The treatment options discussed include: conventional or softening treatment; ion exchange; aluminum‐based technologies; iron‐based technologies; membrane technologies; coagulation‐assisted membrane processes; preoxidation considerations; residuals handling; and, media or chemical availability.
