The difficulty for white ... middle-class women has often been that even where their position as women has made them dependent on men and restricted by men's plans for them, they have also been beguiled by what their particular men could offer them as protection, love and values. Resistance ... would have involved them in a rejection of certainties about men ... and therefore about themselves, which was too dangerous to contemplate. So that a good deal of what could be done by such women was to be won by cajolery and deceit. (234)
