Abstract

Arrival dates of male Willow Warblers at a site in southern England varied in relation to age, with adults arriving earlier on average than first years and males of unknown age. Polygynous males arrived earlier, on average, than monogamous and unmated males, although pairing success was not related to age. The proportion of polygynous males ranged from 0% to 43% and tended to be higher in years of early average arrivals. Settlement rates of males were more synchronous in years of late average arrivals, but territory densities tended to be higher in years of sequential settlement.
