Abstract
TUCSON, ARIZONA-- On 31 August the U.S. Forest Service rejected the Smithsonian Institution9s request to build a $16.6 million gamma ray telescope array on national forest land near the base of Mount Hopkins south of here, citing the proximity of a Native American sweat lodge. The decision has left Native Americans jubilant and scientists struggling to find an alternative site to help maintain U.S. world leadership in gamma ray astronomy.
