Abstract

The array of things (AoT) is part of the new smart cities initiative, enabling researchers to study an urban environment in order to improve city services. It is a project involving a network of sensors that will be installed around Chicago city to collect real-time data on the city’s environment. The data will be freely available to everyone and non-identifying in order to maintain privacy. It can be used to develop new data analysis tools and applications. Although the city of Chicago is the home of the AoT project, AoT was never meant to stay solely within Chicago. Through collaboration, partner projects will move AoT towards a global array of things network that will help around the world. This paper provides a primer on AoT.
