Abstract
Catalytic activity of various cation-exchanged zeolite Y for amination of phenol and anisole has been investigated. Acidities of the various zeolite catalysts were measured by temperature programmed desorption of ammonia. H-Y and Cu-Y exhibited maximum acidity and catalytic activity for phenol amination. The results indicate a correlation between acidity and catalytic activity. The variation of catalytic activity of zeolite NaHY for amination of phenol with the level of exchange was also investigated. The results indicate involvement of cations in the reaction. A probable mechanism has been proposed on the basis of the above findings.
